Runoff Election Results: The Tea Party Is Not Dead

As of 10:00pm, here are the results of the Texas Republican runoff races I’ve been following most closely.

Texas State Senate District 25

Candidate Percent
Dr. Donna Campbell 66.18%
Jeff Wentworth 33.81%

A Tea Party-backed conservative blew out a RINO incumbent despite being outspent by a wide margin.

U.S. Senate

Candidate Percent
Ted Cruz 55.91%
David Dewhurst 44.08%

A conservative backed by the Tea Party, Sarah Palin, Jim DeMint, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, Pat Toomey, Glenn Beck, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, Phyllis Schlafly, and Rick Santorum trounced a Lieutenant Governor who was endorsed by virtually every establishment Republican in the state (including Governor Rick Perry) and spent at least $25 million of his own money, much of it on exceptionally ugly negative ads. When you account for the facts that Ted Cruz started out as one candidate in a crowded primary field with little name recognition and David Dewhurst nearly won the primary outright, you have to conclude that Dewhurst’s loss is profoundly embarrassing.

U.S. House of Representatives District 25

Candidate Percent
Roger Williams 57.66%
Wes Riddle 42.33%

I wish this race had gone the other way, but Roger Williams is huge improvement over my current Congressman (Democrat Lloyd Doggett) and he should do a good job.

To top off the good news, RINO House Speaker Joe Straus lost two more committee chairs in the runoff election, Chuck Hopson and Sid Miller, further weakening his position.
